Are You Challenging Yourself....?

By Chris Gray

If not you could be setting yourself up for certain failure in the future without even knowing it! Setting challenging goals for yourself will not only keep you motivated now but also set you up for long term success in your journey to stay fit.

When is the last time you set a goal for yourself that made you a little uncomfortable, nervous, or even scared....? Most of us have not, but I can assure you from experience that it’s just that kind of goal that will get you out of your comfort zone resulting in dramatic results!

Fact is most people write goals that are comfortable and easy to accomplish for fear of failure. Now...setting attainable goals so not to set yourself up for failure is important too, but you must establish that line between unrealistic and challenging.

Let me give you an example, just last weekend 7 of our very own set a goal to compete in a local 5K run/walk. Now to some this may seem like no big deal but I can assure you that this was a challenge both mentally and physically. I spoke to them at the starting line and the word nervous was prevalent, and as a coach I love to hear that!

When you are nervous, scared, unsure, etc..and have butterflies about taking on your goal, there could’nt be a better scenario for growth not only in body but also spirit. It’s stepping outside your comfort zone like this that keeps you healthy, vibrant, and motivated for more! In doing so you will develop a passion for fitness and health like you have never experienced, being unfit, unhealthy, complacent, even lazy will be a thing of the past.

Even for myself after nearly 15 years living the fitness lifestyle I have to challenge myself in order to stay a step above the rest and make sure as a coach im walking the walk. This upcoming October in Philadelphia I will be challenging myself at the RKC (Russian Kettlebell Certification) instructors weekend. This challenge will consist of 2 full punishing days of Kettlebell training with multiple testing competencies. Im fired up for it but no doubt a bit nervous. Check out the video footage at the link below and see what im up against (also on my Blog), this is just a taste....

You can challenge yourself on a more consistent basis by being a part of a fitness program with a structured path of progression or improvement. In other words a tiered system with levels or steps. It is clear that this kind of structure in your everyday workout routine is critical for long term motivation and success. I mean we have all been stuck in that monotonous rut where we are doing the same things day in and day out, following that path will lead you to failure every time.

Having a multi level training program with clearly defined training levels and testing challenges that must be completed successfully before you can move to the next level of training instantly sets you on a path to succeed . This process will give you goals to shoot for and help keep you motivated long term with the idea of taking your fitness to the next level. This can be compared if you will to martial arts when completing competencies are required before you can get your next color belt and begin more advanced training.

I know from experience that these challenges will take you outside your comfort zone at each level and maybe even scare you a bit, but in doing so will promote progress like you have never experienced before!
