3 Tips to Help Avoid Additional Weight Gain this Holiday Season
By Richelle Melde
The holiday season is almost here, as is the onslaught of high calorie, homemade cakes, pastries and pies. Between Thanksgiving turkey dinner, Christmas goodies and family meals, the average person can expect to put on an additional 12 pounds of unnecessary body fat. For many this is not the first year they have put on the additional weight, and many have kept it on too. If this year is going to be different, it is important to prepare ahead of time. Here are a few tips to avoid gaining the traditional 12 holiday pounds.
1. Be Prepared with a Holiday Eating Plan: It is very easy to get caught up in all the celebrations going on during the holiday season. There are parties with friends, family and co-workers where large amounts of high calorie treats, and indulgent foods are available. It is very easy to consume more then a person should, and consequently experience weight gain.
- The first part of having a holiday eating plan is to monitor what you are eating, and how much. If you need to write it down then do so, because being aware of the amount of food you eat is the first step towards avoiding weight gain.
2 Be Prepared to Exercise Self-Control: When people are socializing, and having a good time the last thing they want to do is exercise self-control. They are more involved with visiting with friends, and family members. There are usually a lot of alcoholic drinks available as well, which makes gaining weight even easier. Alcohol can easily reduce your attention span, and affect your decision-making processes.
- The second step for avoiding additional weight gain during the holiday is to be prepared to exercise self-control. This will be accomplished by limiting the amount of food you eat, and the amount of alcohol you drink as well.
3. Be prepared to face some resistance: One of the challenges that many face around holiday time is the ability to say “no” when Grandma is offering you a piece of her world famous apple pie. We all know it can be awkward for us, and you certainly don’t want to hurt her feelings by turning her down. But if you are going to stick with a plan to limit the amount of food you eat, you will have to say “no” even to Grandma.
- The third step for avoiding weight gain during the holiday is to exercise self-control by pushing the plate away when you are full. Also if others offer you more to eat, remember you have the right to say “no”, and will exercise it.
