Why people get caught in the tangle of
Yo-Yo Dieting
By Richelle Melde
With such a strong social message to be thin is to be sexy, many people put themselves through crash diet after crash diet, attempting to lose weight so they look good. However, even with such good intentions, there are 4 factors that lead to a person gaining back all the weight they just lost.
No Lifestyle Change: It is very easy to assume too narrow of a definition of fitness when it comes to weight-loss. A true definition of fitness should include an individual’s entire life, or to be fit for living. Without a change in lifestyle it is inevitable that a dieter will eventually experience the yo-yo effect. A good example is Kirsty Alley who lost a number of pounds on Jenny Craig, only to gain it all back. The main reason many engage in such short-sighted diets is that they are easier then the prospect of a lifestyle change. Granted, a lifestyle change is going to be difficult at first, but it gets easier as time goes on. Many people who engage in dieting fail to realize a lifestyle change is necessary, and struggle with their weight for long periods of time, maybe their whole life.
- To avoid the yo-yo effect requires a complete lifestyle change that incorporates new food choices, portion control, and exercise. There is simply not shortcut. Target Only Short-Term Goals: Many fad diets targeted at women will produce results in the short-term, but once their effectiveness is reached, results wane. You can take a pill, drink a shake, or starve yourself for a period, and you will lose weight. But be warned, the weight is going to come back, and probably a few extra pounds with it. This is due to the short-term goals of many diets. They are just not able to produce long-term or lasting results. No one is up for the prospect of drinking meal replacement shakes for the rest of their lives. Oprah is a good example of what happens when short-term goals replace a change in lifestyle. Sure she initially lost weight, but as soon as she stopped the diet she gained it all back, and then some too!
- Weight-loss programs which only address short-term goals should be avoided in order to eliminate the yo-yo effect. Lack of Exercise: One of the main reasons that some many diets fail is they completely bypass the exercise component. Why do you suppose that is? Is it because so many people have never really become accustomed to exercise? Is it because exercise is hard work? Keep in mind that exercise is not just an activity, but a lifestyle, and the more you engage in the lifestyle, the more you will come to love it. To avoid the yo-yo effect entirely will require incorporating exercise into your lifestyle. This should be done slowly and gradually at first, but then the intensity can be increased as your fitness level improves. You can also be certain exercise will produce weight-loss, and you will be able to keep it off as well.
- Any diet, popular or not, that fails to include an exercise component will fail, and the participants will eventually experience the yo-yo effect. Unsustainable in the Long-Term: There is probably no doubt that those who’ve engaged in fad diets knew they were just looking for short-term results. They just wanted to take off a quick 5 or 10 pounds without too much effort. But how may knew that they would gain all the weight back they lost, and more as well? It is certain that many would have thought twice had they known the true consequences of their decision. Whether it is Jenny Craig, Slim-Fast, or some of the caffeine laced pills available, none can boast of sustainability, and long-term results. In fact, using these diet supplements over the long-term can increase health risks, some serious medical complications. Simply stated; these diets are not sustainable in the long-term because they fail to give the body what it needs, they promote no exercise, and they create no change in lifestyle.
- The best way to avoid the yo-yo effect is through a good food choices, portion control, and regular exercise.
